“BEING Cleopatra was the best thing that happened to me last year,” a LATINA student said to me in the hall. “BEING CLEOPATRA helped me come out of myself. I tried using her mind control method when I felt down and it worked. My teacher this year says I WRITE way better than most kids, and it’s because of that play. Oh, and I almost forgot to say that my SCORES on the big STATE TEST went up a lot too.”

This will happen to you, if you use my fast action, easy to read play IN CLASS. It’s for you to use in ENGLISH classes(grades 9-12), instead of some novel that the kids don’t like anyway.

My teacher instructions tell you EXACTLY WHAT TO DO AND SAY, so doing this play is EASY for you. The book contains TEN RAPP WRITING worksheets, in class assignments that address important CRITICAL THINKING ISSUES that arise from the text. The students are put into pairs (more able matched with less able); all the oral and written work IS DONE WITH THEIR PARTNER, so all the kids can feel “safe”, and they can really REACH COMMON CORE goals.

I provide the “ladders” so they can really grow in sophisticated language skills. I provide worksheets with STEM SENTENCES so even limited English kids can achieve real success in learning how to write good paragraphs.

In addition, this play works well with GIFTED students. They are usually impressed that some of the play comes from SHAKESPEARE, and they like the COMPLEXITY of the personal and moral issues they are asked to talk and write about.

This play, if you do it the way I suggest, will change the atmosphere in your room. Everything becomes more POSITIVE because they’re all enjoying the exciting, basically true historical story, and they really can do the work required. CONTROL ISSUES almost disappear because the “trouble makers” are much more involved than usual, and most kids are in their seats most of the time.

Because they want to find out what happens next, your students will WANT TO COME TO CLASS. They’ll leave your room sometimes still talking about who they were in the play. How often does that happen?!
