On the first day of this assignment, students read the story "Click Clack the Ratlle Bag" as bell work. Students do nothing with the story until the end of class. Then they test their memory and comprehension skills. After a second 'reading' of the story, students write a paragraph summary and write a personal reflection about how well they remembered the story and what some of their strengths and weaknesses are.
The next day, students work to support a given claim. First, they are told to just find quotes to support the claim, then they are told to explain how the quotes support the claim. Lastly, they complete a two chunk paragraph outline.
Not included: A copy of the story, the mini-lesson on paragraph structure, and quote embedding.
