After using Jim Wright’s Lesson from Intervention Central, I have noticed that my readers need long term practice with this strategy.
When a student encounters and unknown word, either they can not read or do not know the meaning of they turn their card over.
Encourage students to use any “Fix Up Strategies” that have been taught, if they can not figure out the word, then they can turn their card to red to ask for help. Then the teacher can model ways they may be able to “Fix Up” the word. This personalized intervention can make reading so much more meaningful for the student. As they gain practice and confidence in their reading students will use the card less and less. The goal is for them to be thoughtful more active readers!
