This is a wonderful, engaging lab for students that helps them practice planning and carrying out experiments (NGSS Science and Engineering Practice #3 and AP Science Practices).
Students work together to design an experiment testing which surfaces are hotter than others outside. They create a poster for presentation at the end of this part.
The lab uses inexpensive infrared thermometers-one per group: https://amzn.to/2CQR36J OR students can use regular thermometers or sensors.
The second part of the lab is an engineering activity where students brainstorm and draw out a design of something that would prevent the urban heat island effect at school or at home. They will read an article and watch a short video to help stimulate ideas.
