Pass out the instructions and let the students teach the lessons on climate and weather! Student groups will research the required information and create a slide show of the given objectives, provide an interesting activity or two the class can do to reinforce the learning, and even give a quiz. All will be student-created!
Students love to create, and will learn more about a topic if they have to teach it themselves. The learning games and activities the students create are very imaginative and fun!
The climate and weather unit in my Earth Science class comes at the end of the school year, when we all were worn out. This method of delivery revives us all and we finish the year upbeat.
The five topics within the Climate and Weather Unit are:
- History of Earth's Atmosphere
- How Solar Energy Affects Earth's Atmosphere
- Weather Phenomena
- Weather Forecasting
- Climate Change
Included in this product are all of the instructions the students need to put together their lesson (they will have to do the research themselves), a 'Group Plan' organizer to help them keep on task, a 'Conference Report' which is an optional group meeting form, and a rubric for them to follow and for you to use for grading.
Our block schedule allows long periods, so I gave them 4 periods for preparation, with daily guidance, and then 5 periods were allotted for the presentations/lessons. Since I saw them every other day, this unit covered a time period of about 3 weeks.
Give yourself a break and let the students teach you!
