Your students will love this cooperative learning strategy and it’s very simple to use in your classroom. It’s a one time set up and then you can relax the rest of the year. Each student will have 4 different partners: 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock. Whenever you want your students to participate in paired learning simply say “Find your __ o’ clock partner!” and they’ll automatically know who they’re working with.
There are two set up options when using clock partners:
Option 1: Pass out one template to each student and allow them to circulate the classroom to find their four partners. Remind students that BOTH partners need to write the other person’s name on their template. For example, if Sally chooses Jimmy as her 12 o’clock partner, Sally needs to write Jimmy’s name and Jimmy needs to write Sally’s name. When students are done choosing all four of their partners they sit back down in their seats. Note: if you have an odd number of students you may have to have a group of three.
Option 2: Teachers can do the set up themselves or provide them with their 12 o’clock partner and 6 o’clock and allow the students to choose their 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock partners.
