The Common Core emphasizes the importance of using challenging, above grade level texts for close reads within the classroom. I encourage my students to connect to the text and monitor their thinking during close reads by jotting their thoughts in the margins of the text. We also mark our texts with symbols. These three symbols help students express when they do not understand something, already knew a particular fact or idea, or find something interesting within the text. This process helps my students connect to the text, access their prior knowledge, and express any misunderstandings. It also allows me to assess their comprehension of the text and guide the discussion we have together of the close read.
I've created visual bookmarks to help my students use the symbols during a close read. My students use these bookmarks in whole group lessons and small group learning. I've included a written response sheet in case your students are not able to write within the margins of the close read. I hope you enjoy this learning tool and find it useful for your students. :)
