Students can use any novel, short story, poem or text when completing this close read graphic organizer. I teach students close reading by having them first perform a First Read where they identify places for clarification, a Second Read where they analyze author's language, choices and structure, and a Third Read where they make connections, find patterns, or identify themes. We then take these close reading sheets to create literary analysis essays. This has been a great help in showing students how themes and characters develop across a text.
