This close reading mini-lesson allows students to practice skills according to The College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards as well as several Common Core Language and Reading Standards. Vocabulary skills using context clues and word parts are practiced with the teacher and independently. These skills related to language use and vocabulary expansion are important to prepare students for success. Students are also required to cite evidence from the text while writing complete answers. Reading fluency is also demonstrated during this mini-lesson. It can be used to prepare your students to read complex text independently and proficiently, incorporate needed college and career readiness skills, and build confidence. This mini-lesson includes:

• Defined vocabulary, vocabulary for discussion, and vocabulary for students to independently define using word parts and context clues.

The text was provided through a public domain site. The Lexile level is 970. This is at the higher end of complexity for the 4-5 grade band and in the middle and lower end of complexity for the 6-8 grade band. Use this to scaffold younger readers or even as an assessment for stronger readers. Use of these simple scaffolding techniques to increase engagement, build comprehension, expand vocabulary, and practice skills can be used repeatedly. These skills are essential for students seeking success in college and life.
