Close Read of “The Collared Crow” Folktale from Africa
I can read a folktale from Africa closely to determine the theme based on the plot and the main idea.
I can use specific details from the text to support my ideas.
Included in this lesson: Lesson Plan, Student Response Sheets, Folktale, Folktale Modified with boxes for notes, Smartboard Lesson to use to facilitate discussion, Smartboard Lesson with notes from my class discussion
These lessons can be used to complement the 3rd Grade NYS Module 1, Unit 3- Accessing Books Around the World from Engage NY. They can also be used as part of a Traditional Literature unit study or a study of theme. The text used is complex and was used with third graders with support. Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders could use this with increasingly more independence. After this lesson, my students read and responded in writing to “The Poplar Tree” independently.
