The following lesson in close reading is targeted for 4th – 6th grade students, using primary source text and pictures from the National Archives. It includes teaching notes about close reading and documents that can be printed for each student to use during the lesson. The lesson also includes vocabulary, a pre-assessment/post-assessment, and some text-dependent questions.
The CCSS have shifted our goals in English/Language Arts. The expectation now includes building knowledge in disciplines such as social studies and science using a staircase of complexity. Students must utilize strategies such as Close Reading to comprehend text.
Close reading contains 4 Phases
• What does the text say?
• How does the text work?
• What does the text mean?
• What does the text inspire you to do?
