This assignment provides students with two 20th century poems about war that students must read closely, analyze, and synthesize information from. The close reading activity provides the poem and scaffolded questions side-by-side, mimicking the format of Common Core assessments. The assignment requires that students locate supporting evidence during reading to help them respond to the rigorous essential question. Students will examine how the poets create their central messages and then explain how the author's messages and approaches differ. The third page of the assignment is an optional extension activity, as it requires that students write and answer their own questions about a third (related) poem.
