Do your students love to learn about animals? I know mine sure do!
This packet was designed to help students build non-fiction reading skills and strategies through high interest passages about vertebrate animals. Within this packet there are two reading level passages for each vertebrate animal group as well as high-quality color photographs to accompany each reading passage. I have included vocabulary cards to go with each reading passage. The vocab cards have been intentionally left without a picture, to enable students to illustrate their own. By illustrating each vocab word, students cement new vocabulary and take ownership of these words. (A great strategy to use with your English Language Learners.) Also included is a student learning log for readers to draw, label and write about each group's characteristics, as well as, animal picture cards for sorting.
The vertebrate passages were designed to be compiled into a book, but each can also stand alone as close reads. This is a great resource to use in guided reading groups, as a partner reading activity or in intervention groups. It is also a great resource to use within your English Language Learner instruction.
