At Teaching for Change, I try to incorporate new techniques into my teaching. I decided to incorporate close reading using annotation symbols three years ago. Since then, I have developed this "code" with symbols, guiding questions, and explanations to help students during the initial stages of close reading. When students complete their first few close reads, they rely heavily on this organizer and on me. As they become more independent through guided release, they rely less and less on the codes because they can make connections, predictions, and ask questions without the codes thereby increasing their critical thinking and their ability to monitor their own comprehension.
