Excerpt from Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech”
This close reading assignment uses a famous speech in history to provide a challenging text for readers to practice the skills and strategies of reading. It can be used for homework or classwork and allows students to practice the following:
1. Fluency (primarily pacing) with a parent/guardian or friend.
2. Vocabulary with the use of context clues.
3. Comprehension strategies/ habits (questioning, clarifying, summarizing, predicting, inferencing.
4. Short response comprehension skills with analysis and evaluation.
