These bookmarks will help students gain independence with the Common Core process of reading texts closely. The first bookmark is meant to review the purpose and steps of close reading. The second bookmark gives students codes for "talking to the text" with a pencil as they read. These codes were chosen very carefully to help students meet the requirements of the Common Core standards. The third bookmark uses the PEEL acronym to remind students of the format and elements needed in a written response for text dependent questions. For my students, I copy the second and third bookmarks back to back. This way they can go through the 3-step process of close reading with one simple bookmark in hand.
