Included in this packet are nine wonderful and diverse stories of the greatest real life men and women heroes of the past including Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi, Father Flanagan, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Anne Frank, Dalai Lama, and Harriet Tubman. Students will engage in close reading and comprehension activities such as cause and effect, inferences, compare and contrast, problem solving, drawing conclusions, determining story themes (morals), identifying important facts, using context clues, identifying important details, summarizing. The question pages are QR code enabled. Also included are full answer keys and graphic organizers.
The articles are written on 4th to 5th grade reading levels (9 and 10 years old). They can be used with younger or older kids as determined by their skill level. The activities are great for whole group, small group, individuals, centers, and homework applications. Pages in the packet can be printed either in color or grayscale with good results. These activities are effective as a homeschool or summer reading resource.

The passages of historical heroes in this resource can be used as an assessment tool to test upper elementary students in grade 3, 4, or 5 on their comprehension skill levels. The exercises, problems, and activities on the printable worksheets adhere to core standards in the U.S and elsewhere. The biographies of heroes in history include those from many races, ethnicities and countries including unsung black heroes of America. The activities can be a great supplement to district and state curriculum requirements and are easily adaptable to existing lesson plans.
