This Mini Unit focuses on identifying elements the author uses to convey meaning through a chapter study of “The Stories Julian Tells”. By having students do several close reads of the chapter, “The Pudding Like a Night on the Sea”, students will identify the structure of the chapter, cause and effect, how the meaning of words effect the story,and how the text evidence supports their analysis.
This mini unit includes:

Students will analyze two double meaning words in this chapter through a graphic organizer. Students will also work to find cause and effect relationships within the chapter. The 6 constructed response questions build off the graphic organizer and dive into the craft and structure of the text.
This unit affords a great opportunity for deep conversations in small group or whole group. This unit can span anywhere between 2-6 days, depending on how many constructed response questions you choose to have students complete.
CCSS Standards addressed in this unit:
Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.
Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza; describe how each successive part builds on earlier sections.
