I LOVE THIS PROJECT!!
I just finished this and used it with my 10th and 11th graders, but it can be used with students of all ages.
Basically, this is the assignment/info sheet for the project, as it covers every requirement and discussion prompt that students need.
You could use this with a poem, short story, or a novel - it is SO versatile!! I used it with a novel and students discussed with their groups twice a week for 4 weeks. You could use it as often or as little as you want! I had them record their discussions via a podcast app, and they had so much fun! In my 5 years of teaching, I have never had such a high engagement rate.
Seriously - and I'm not just saying this because I created it - EVERY LA teacher should use this in their classroom. My students' discussions were consistently in-depth and I enjoyed listening to their podcasts each week.
About the discussion: I got this idea from a podcast I listen to often, and then I modified it to align with my classroom and the ELA standards.
This project allows students to examine multiple themes, draw connections to the text, and deeply analyze author's craft and use of language.
It is essentially a spin on literature circles but SO MUCH BETTER.
There's a discussion rubric as well.
Please give it a try!!
