This is a series of four passages from prose, poetry, and non-fiction texts. For each passage, I included directions for annotating (highlighting, underlining, and circling), suggestions for margin writing, and a sentence stem leading to an analytical statement.
The purpose of this mini-lesson is to sharpen the close reading skills of low to middle level high school readers. The following concepts will be practiced among these four passages:
--simile and metaphor
--context clues for new vocabulary
--point of view
This assignment would work well for group work, stations, or individual practice.
