What educators are saying

This resource was great for a lesson that can be used for an entire week. My students learned important facts that they can discuss in class, as well as at home.

Description

Four reading comprehension passages on election topics including primaries, campaigns, and voting machines have everything needed for full close reading lessons. In addition to the full-page informational articles, there are text-dependent questions and lots of additional activities specific to each reading. Here is what is included - ready to use to cover all of the steps:

The four articles -

1. Make It or Break It Primaries

2. Love Those Campaign Buttons

3. The Best Voting Machines?

4. One Day on the Campaign Trail

Seven activities for each article -

For the First Reading

Text Dependent Questions (TDQs)

Main idea and Supporting Details – Graphic Organizer

For the Second Reading

Text Dependent Questions (TDQs)

Vocabulary Graphic Organizer

Text Structure Graphic Organizer

For the Third Reading

Text Dependent Questions (TDQs)

Writing Prompt

Also included are a chart that shows students just what they need to do for each reading and a chart of the symbols for marking up the texts. In addition, there is a smaller version of these two charts for students' notes.

The articles and the TDQs are arranged in a landscape, two-column format so that they can be folded to fit easily into student's notebooks.

This packet is designed to be easy to use, with everything that you need to do a full close reading of each of the four articles.

The Easel Activities are ready to use with answer boxes and directions already in place for student use.

The activities support the Reading: Informational Text standards such as using text evidence to make inferences, determining main ideas using text evidence, identifying text structures, and using clues in the text to define words.
