I use the first two chapters from Francine Prose’s Reading Like a Writer, Chapter 1: “Close Reading” and Chapter 2: “Words”; pp. 1-34, to extend student learning with a rich extension to Chapter 2, “Close Reading: The Art and Craft of Analysis,” of The Language of Composition by Shea, Scanlon, and Aufses. I have students read these texts efferently (to gain information) and aesthetically.
The chapter questions that apply to Prose’s text give students the opportunity to close read Reading Like a Writer and apply Prose’s concepts. I have added some sample paragraphs of my own to the back of the student questions to guide students in constructing their own responses to the Prose questions. Sample student responses are included for each question.
