Product Description
The goal of this lesson is for students to be able to explain how views of women have changed across time by analyzing texts for author's craft. Perfect for the Reading or Language Arts teacher looking to include informational text or the Social Studies teacher looking to incorporate reading skills!

This Author's Craft tutorial begins with an analysis of two songs, "Survivor" and "Independent Women" from the sining group Destiny's Child led by Beyonce Knowles. Students listen to and make notes for each section and discuss what the message is about women.

Next, students are introduced to the benchmarks under this category of Author's Craft according to the FCAT Test Specifications: Author's Purpose, Author's Perspective, Tone, and Bias. Students answer questions about the songs on these benchmarks.

Students then learn about Women's Suffrage and the differing perspectives at the time. Students do a Perspective Sort, first with Historic Political Cartoons, then with quotes from activists at the time.

Now students are ready to show what they know about Author's Craft by reading an editorial written by Beyonce Knowles about women's rights today and answering questions.

Finally, students are ready to tackle the Text-Dependent writing prompt: How have views of women changed across time? Support your answer with support from the sources you used today. A scoring guide is also included.

Included in this lesson...
* Lyrics and audio to both songs
* Powerpoint that includes teacher notes to guide the lesson
* Editorial on women's rights today by Beyonce Knowles
* Questions based on the FCAT Test Specifications for Author's Craft, but can be used for standardized test prep for any test.
