In the attached PDF, you'll find a short nonfiction, current events passage (approx. end of grade 1st/beginning of 2nd grade level readability according to the new common core lexile bands), 2 scaffolded paraphrasing pages, text-dependent questions, and illustrate the passage activity. These are all the activities involved in close reading. There is some basic clip art but not much because part of close reading involves no schema to be pre-activated and no pictures to support meaning. The children are to derive meaning from paraphrasing, summarizing, and understanding the text structure.
This lesson takes 2 reading periods and shouldn't be done in one sitting unless you are using it for second grade students or tutoring.
This close reading activity is meant to be done with teacher guidance and support.
Depending on your learners, you may be able to use this at the end of kindergarten if you have gifted/higher-level learners
The students should be comfortable with writing five-six complete sentences before working on this activity (to answer the five comprehension questions).
