Description
Close reading is an important skill for success in high school English. Teach your students the art of close reading as you guide them through the process with this interactive slideshow. Use gradual release of responsibility as you help them build the skills needed to understand author technique and purpose.
Included are excerpts from several classic texts, all of which are in the public domain. I have tried to provide a variety of genres and techniques for students to examine. You will find short poems or excerpts from Dickinson, Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens, DH Lawrence, Poe, Stoker, Ibsen and even part of a speech from President Obama.
The package includes 100 slides that focus on the close reading of ten different passages, as well as 19 pages of handouts for teacher and students. The teacher's handouts have notes and sample comments for each passage; student handouts include the passage for close reading, with room for notes.
The slides could be used to introduce close reading all at once, or as class openers.
