Are your students having trouble understanding what to notice during a close reading of text? I created these guides because my students needed a scaffold for this task. This also provides student accountability and a measure for you to assess just how well your students understand the concept of close reading. The two guides included in this product are focused on characterization and setting.
The characterization guide gives students support in closely analyzing physical traits of characters, making inferences that may be drawn from those traits into deeper understanding of the character, and noticing characters' words and actions to determine underlying feelings or motivations.
The setting guide gives students support in noticing how the author reveals the setting, making inferences from subtle clues in the setting, and how the setting can often affect characters or explain character motivation.
Included are two full size sheets which can be used for students or even as a projectable with which to model the close reading process. Also included are two smaller versions for use in an interactive notebook. Due to the amount of information on the pages, the smaller versions have limited space for students to write, but will be a useful reference for students to return to for support.
I created these pages out of necessity for my own class, and will be adding more as we continue through the year. If you find this useful and successful, please come back and check often for new versions.
