Teachers will help students use textual evidence to gain a deeper understanding of the text. The text is an excerpt from Ingredients of Young Outliers: A Recipe for Personal Achievement by John Shufeldt.
The in-class close reading handout has students reading the piece on guts or buts three times. The first time, they will be answering questions about what they observed. With the second read, students will begin to analyze the piece. Finally, the third read will help the students look at how the text works.
In addition to the close reading handout, there is a Blooms Taxonomy question list that teachers can use for discussion.
