I use these two handouts as close reading activities with two contemporary short stories: "Big Boy" by David Sedaris and "Babycakes" by Neil Gaiman. If you don't already teach these stories, I highly recommend them for high school use. The Sedaris story is about an unfortunate finding in a bathroom during a dinner party, which is a tad crude but humorously written and revealing about societal norms. The Gaiman story is a satire about animal testing in which society decides babies are okay to experiment on and use for food and clothing. Both are a hit with teenagers and are amazing at focusing students in on why the author would even write about these things in these ways.
Due to copyright, the stories are not included in this packet.
These two handouts work great for helping students focus on author's style and purpose in literature. I hope you enjoy.
Thanks for looking, and keep coming back to find more high school English activities and lessons. Happy teaching!
