The posters are colorful and cute and use the "digging deeper" metaphor to illustrate each read. They're great to put up in your classroom as you teach the Close reading process.

The handouts are loaded with great information about the specifics of Close Reading, which might be helpful to you and your students if Close Reading is new to you.

I love the templates included because they are perfect when you find a really good passage to focus on but need a student answer sheet. Whether you find a passage in a piece of literature or an article in Time for Kids/Scholastic, these templates will work regardless of the text used.

The heart of this unit has got to be the passages included. These eight topics were carefully selected to be interesting for your students and to have enough text complexity to be read several times. I loved researching the information and learned so much about each topic.

The Close Reading Questions for Teachers Task Cards have questions that are designed to help your students practice digging deeper into the text and each question can be used with one type of text (Fiction or Informational Text) and sometimes both.

I am crazy about task cards for students but these task cards are a little different…they're for teachers! This set of 148 Close Reading Question Task cards will come in handy as you navigate your way through Close Reading. The questions found here will help your students go back to the text and to dig deeper to find answers.

More about the questions… These cards were created to be a versatile tool because they can be used with any text, whether it is a piece of fiction or non-fiction. Individual cards will work well for one or both of the text types. They are titled as well as color coded which makes them handy. That way if you're using your own text, you can easily find questions at each of the three levels that will match the passage you're focusing on.

More about Close Reading questions…After the first read, students will answer Key Ideas and Details types of questions. These questions ask basic information about key details, characters, setting, main idea or who/what/when/where types of questions. The cards are titled Key Ideas and Details and they are color coded pink.

After the second read, the questions are ramped up a bit and deal with the passage's Craft and Structure. These cards are color coded blue. Students will be asked about vocabulary choices, text features, text structures, and point of view.

When the third text reading is complete, students will answer even higher level thinking questions called Integration of Knowledge and Ideas. These questions ask them to compare and contrast, to find cause and effect relationships, to synthesize and analyze information from the text. Integration of Knowledge and ideas cards are color coded purple.

There are also cards called "Evidence from the Text" cards which are yellow. These are good to use with many of the other three types of question cards to remind students to cite evidence from the text to support their ideas. So, once you've selected a good question, feel free to add the Evidence from the Text piece on the end of the question wherever it fits well.

Once you laminate the cards, you can separate them into question type (done easily by color) and store them in envelopes/baggies in a plastic shoe box. Another way to store them is to hole punch the corner and put each set on rings. Super useful and organized in my opinion!

I just love both of these sets and am so happy to share them with you. I really hope that they will be worthwhile in your classroom.
