This close reading lesson plan is an excerpt from chapter 5 of Bud, Not Buddy. It is the part where Bud remembers Momma repeating the same conversations over and over when he was 6. It is the 1st of several close reading lessons to be used throughout this book. I'll post the other lessons ASAP. It is assumed that your students will be reading the entire book from chapter 1 to the end, but that you will just stop at the excerpts used in the close reading lessons to do a close read. Each of the lessons is detailed for the 1st reading (students either cold read or read aloud with teacher and annotate), 2nd reading (students read to discover what the text says explicitly and make logical inferences, summarizing the key ideas and details using text dependent questions), and 3rd reading (students read and answer text dependent questions that focus on the author's craft and structure). The excerpt has been typed out and includes an embedded glossary and a column for annotations. Text dependent questions are written along the side so students can refer quickly to the glossary and questions while reading. It includes a graphic organizer for students to record information on the main characters. Two options for explanatory writing are given.
