Common Core Aligned! Informational Text! This is a lesson outline of a Close Reading lesson to be done using a high interest article from the NY Times. (link to article provided) The lesson outline provides pre-reading activities, during the reading, and after reading activities. Student handouts provided. All high level questions are used (Costa's Level 3). A list of tier 3 vocabulary has been provided, as well as multiple summative extended writing prompts (student handouts). Students are given choice on final writing prompt (following the Danielson's Framework for student choice). The writing prompts require the use of text based details. This lesson outline requires students to engage in Reading, Writing, Inquiry, and Collaboration. Students will have the chance to participate in a Philosophical Chair activity. Students will find the topic relatable and will surely be engaged! (I used this during an observation lesson). Will take multiple class periods.
