A close read is a careful and purposeful rereading of a text. It’s an encounter with the text where students really focus on what the author has to say, , what the words mean, and what the author’s purpose is. Close reading requires that students actually think about and understand what they are reading. For children such as Kindergarteners and First Graders, this can be a challenging task. It is, however, a very important skill and strategy to acquire. Therefore, I have found a way to approach it with this age child. As I learn more, I’m sure I will adjust here and there, but this is something that my students are really having fun with.
