Students can use these close reading posters to demonstrate their understanding of and show their thinking through close reading exercises. The poster format is perfect for open ended reading responses, with the questions broken down by the number of "close reads" a student completes. They can be used as an assessment for learning (as a diagnostic activity to see what knowledge your students are bringing to a concept), assessment as learning (as a formative assessment during a unit or as a review before the end of a unit), or as assessment of learning (as a summative task at the end of a unit).

This resource contains 16 different posters – 4 for fiction, 4 for informational texts, 4 for poetry, and 4 that fit all three genres. There is a letter code in the bottom left corner of each poster to show what genre of text to use it for (F, I, P, or FIP).

For these close reading posters, students are asked to do 3 close reads of a text. For each read they are instructed to mark the text (question marks on the first read, stars on the second read (for main idea and key details), and exclamation marks for the third read). They also have 2 reader response questions to answer for each close read.

To use these posters, students need a short section (1-2 pages) of the text they are analyzing (fictional narrative, informational text, poetry). I photocopy these sections so the students can make marks on the text.

These posters make a GREAT sub day activity, needing little to no prep for you or the sub. They would also make a great addition to your reading notebooks.

Posters are in black and white and are easy to reproduce. Students are expected to add visual appeal to the posters by adding color and creativity.

A rubric is also included for summative or formative assessment. I have also made a student self-reflection checklist for students to use prior to handing in their posters.

I have also included a poster with empty boxes in case you want to add questions that are not covered in this resource. This is not editable though, so you will have to write in your questions.

Completed posters will make a fabulous bulletin board display that both students and teachers will be proud of!
