As you teach your students to read closely, you may use the idiom regarding “digging deep”. With each time that they read/re-read a piece of text, they gain a deeper understanding of the passage. Use the following posters to guide them to reading, re-reading, writing, talking about, and listening to others about the text.
I’ve also included a set of bookmarks for you to print and give to your students to help them remember the steps of “digging deep” into their understanding of the texts they read.
“I have the tools to read.”
“After reading once, I have begun to dig into the meaning.”
“After reading again, I have a deeper understanding of the meaning.”
“I write to share my thinking.”
“I talk to share my thinking.”:
“I listen to understand other people’s thinking.”
2 posters of sets of the above (First 3 on one, and the last 3 on the other.)
