Close Reading with Fiction and Nonfiction related text. It is important for students to engage in close, or deeper, reading. This resource provides you with 2 original passages that can be used individually or in conjunction of each other. The first passage is a fiction text about an boy that struggles with concentration and learning his spelling words. The second passage is a non-fiction text about the history of Merry-go-rounds. This will complement the first passage due to a metaphor used within the fiction text, "my stomach felt like there was a merry-go-round spinning inside". Each text can be used to work on comprehension, author's purpose, vocabulary, figurative speech, point of view, & text-to-text connections. You'll also find 2 opinion writing prompts, an expository writing prompt, practice with similes,a note catcher, student cards for text coding with a class poster, and answer keys.
