This is a resource to help students collect evidence in order to answer a text-based open response question. The procedure here guides students through a few explicit steps that will result in their obtaining pieces of evidence and finding patterns in this evidence in order to make an inference. This inference is in fact the answer to the open response question. As a teacher with a goal centered around students developing proficient open responses, I have found that students are able to pull information from a text, but it is often unrelated and/or they neglect to actually answer the question at hand. This close reading procedure prevents that from happening. After collecting evidence, students look for patterns and ultimately, create a new idea that becomes their claim/answer to the question. This product includes a process chart for making inferences in order to answer text-based open responses, as well as an example T-chart (already filled out). This is the first step in helping your students achieve proficiency on answering open responses questions! This is a PDF file.
