Product Description
Close Reading - Close Reading Question Fans - Reading Response Prompts for Any Text

This resource contains close reading questions for teachers or students to use during and after close reading activities. Teachers can use these questions for whole or small group work, after reading minilessons, during or after guided reading lessons, literature circles, literacy centers, pair shares, oral discussions, or during reading conferences with students. Students can also use these questions when working independently, or with a partner or small group during or after the completion of reading activities.

There are different philosophies behind close reading activities. This resource focuses on three different reads for close reading. The first read is all about first impressions – reading through for key ideas and details, as well as any questions students may have. The second read focuses on craft and structure – rereading for a deeper understanding of the text. The third read integrates all the ideas, and focuses on what the text means to the reader and how it connects to other ideas and experiences.

There are 66 questions all together - 22 questions for each read (first, second, and third). The first 10 questions for each read fit any text (fiction, informational, or poetry). There are then 4 questions specific to each text type (fiction, informational, or poetry). These questions are coded by a letter on the right side of the question slip.

I have also included a page of blank frames for each "read" if you want to add some of your own questions. They are not editable though, so you will have to write in your questions. There is also a checklist sheet for each "read" for students or teachers to keep track of questions asked.

The question sheets should be printed out on cardstock or on regular paper and laminated for extra durability. Cut out the individual questions and punch a small hole in the end of each question. Questions can then be put together with a brass fastener or a binder ring to keep them together.
