Close reading is a big part of the Common Core and an important skill to master. This resource will not only give your students valuable close reading practice, but will also teach them a great deal about objects in our solar system other than planets (asteroids, meteoroids, meteors, meteorites, and comets). These passages were written by me. I am a published author with over 100 nonfiction books for children in print.
There are four article-length passages included. Each passage is presented at two reading levels (V.1 and V.2 in the upper right-hand corners) so you can differentiate as needed. The passages are related, but each one can also work as a stand-alone activity. Each passage also includes a text feature in the form of a picture, diagram, or text box. Each passage focuses on different aspects of close reading.
The passages themselves are presented much as you might see them in the real world (so no cute fonts, images, or borders – I saved those for the student activities.) This will allow your students to focus on the text without distractions and will also give them room to annotate in the margins. The landscape format is perfect for interactive notebooks – you can either fold the page in half so that it opens like a book, or you can cut the page down the center and glue the halves on opposite pages.

Each passage includes several activities:
A teacher instruction page
with the focus of the passage, ideas for setting a purpose for reading, vocabulary, and a linked bibliography of sources.
A multiple choice comprehension quiz
that can be used after the first read as test prep, to check understanding, and to build confidence before moving into more challenging questions. This page is more comprehension than close reading.
Two graphic organizers
which focus on craft and structure and are perfect for using after the second read.
A text-dependent questions printable
for use after the third read.
– these are the same questions from the printable, but are formatted to be cut out and used in interactive notebooks or with notebook paper.
for all activities are provided at the end of the resource.
