As we work with more primary source documents, I find my students struggling to correctly annotate, or what I always thought of as "marking up", the text. They want to highlight it and highlight all of it, call it important and close the book without gaining any understanding of the material.
I model it many times on my document camera and created this handout to help them. We placed it in the front of their Interactive Student Notebooks and we review it now before they work with a piece of text on their own. It has dramatically improved the quality of their work.
