PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Annotating is an excellent close-reading strategy for both literary and informational text. It encourages the reader to connect with the text on a deep level and produces a visual trail of the reader’s thoughts and insights.

Close-reading by annotating allows a reader to slow down and read manageable chunks of text, identify important parts, make connections to a text, and document one’s thoughts.

Included in this file is a complete set of instructions for how to begin annotating and text coding immediately and how to incorporate the strategy into daily practice. The lesson follows the gradual release process, where the teacher models the activity before the students practice independently. Articles are provided for modeling and practice.

UPDATE! - I've developed a new metacognitive strategy to use with annotation that I'm calling "Developing the Negative." The presentation has been updated and additional materials are provided to walk you and your students through the activity.
