Good readers have habits of mind that enable them to automatically dig deeper when reading a text. Close Reading gives struggling readers strategies to analyze and interpret a text. The Close Reading Bookmark is a convenient, useful reference tool students can refer to when reading a text, and aligns to the Common Core Standards of reading complex texts. I recommend teaching one strategy at a time, using small pieces of text that students are able to mark up. After repeated teacher modeling and guided practice, close reading will become a habit of mind as students read complex texts. The power verbs can be adapted for different content areas and different purposes for reading. For example, I use this particular bookmark when reading informational texts with students, but I would adapt the power verbs when reading poetry. Close Reading is a valuable strategy students can bring with them as they enter post secondary education. Bookmark can be printed on 1-2 sided card stock and laminated for repeated use.
