Give these bookmarks to your students to help remind them to annotate the text during close reading. Students use different symbols to indicate their thinking. This allows them to not just write a comment, but remind them what prompted them to make a comment in the first place.
The symbols are also very helpful when students discuss the text. They can see where their thinking was similar to their classmates and this gives them natural discussion prompts.
There are three options of bookmarks provided.
* Option 1: Symbols for Close Reading ALL texts
* Option 2: Symbols for Fiction Texts
* Option 3: Symbols for Non-Fiction Texts
The fiction and non-fiction text book marks can be copied back to back (double-sided) on the same sheet so students have both fiction and non-fiction on one bookmark.
These symbols can also be used during independent reading and literature circles.
There are 2 bookmarks per page. These can be laminated or taped to desks.
These symbols are great for helping students really think about their reading and annotate as they read. My students love using these symbols to help them as they annotate. They are also very helpful for students that have a hard time recording their thoughts as they read because it gives ideas to use.
