Product Description
Close reading and annotating are “like” hunting for buried treasure: you have to find the good stuff hidden beneath the surface! Teach deeper reading with this lesson sequence to introduce active vs. passive reading and how to annotate a literary text.

By starting with a candy-based treasure hunt and transitioning to traditional annotation, students are engaged and willing to look harder for what’s hiding in plain sight. This lesson puts emphasis on finding literary devices, writing techniques, theme, symbolism, and reactions/margin comments.

This mini-unit would be a great one to use before your next novel unit, poetry unit, or other reading lessons; made with middle school in mind, it will also work for high school students who need help with the purpose or how-to of annotating.

Here’s how it works:
• Day 1: Introduction lesson, close reading of a poem* as an example
• Day 2: Close reading/candy annotation of a short story*
• Day 3: Mini-quiz and mini-lesson on refining/improving our annotations
• Bonus/Optional: Day 4, Individual “Annotation Check” assessment (using a short story or text of your choosing)

This 13-page slide ALSO includes…
• Teacher’s guide with additional tips
• Photos of my annotations (with and without candy)
• Editable files AND the PDF versions

Check out the PREVIEW for additional photos!

*NOTE: My version uses the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and the short story "Thank You, Ma'am", but you are welcome to replace these texts with your own to make this mini-unit easier or more challenging for your class.
