This section includes pre-planning strategies, a list of complex ideas to focus on during instruction, a how-to on choosing texts for close reading, and the three components of text complexity explained. This section also includes an explanation of the progression of text-dependent lessons, useful in scaffolding.
Then, you will learn how to teach close reading! This section includes scaffolded methods for teaching leading to a gradual release of responsibility. I also included things to consider when planning, different models to meet your students’ needs, a list of what close reading must incorporate, step-by-step planning guideline, and criteria for choosing vocabulary.
Next, you have 3 sample anchor charts. One of the charts is printable!
Also, included is a list of annotation symbols! These can be printed out and glued into students’ reading response notebooks for a quick reference.
The packet also lists text suggestions for each comprehension skill. This is useful in the planning stages. It includes multiple texts for 10 different comprehension skills. I also included a list of resources for when searching for texts to help you get started.
Topic 9 is a list of text-dependent questions. There are multiple question prompts listed. The prompts are divided into the following categories: Recall, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, and Create.
