This introductory unit includes two lessons based on the text The Last Diary Entry of John Wilkes Booth to introduce students to close reading, annotating, and text-based questions. These are skills that will continue to serve them throughout their entire academic careers. This unit provides teachers with the first tools they need to guide their students towards becoming GREAT readers. The first presentation describes the "3 steps" to successful close reading and annotating, while the second includes strategies, such as sentence starters and paragraph frames, that will encourage students to think critically, create meaning, and derive support from the text. Both lessons use examples from the same text so that the instructional focus may remain on the process.

Once the students have been introduced to the skills and concepts taught in both lessons, the mini assessment uses two new texts, The Phoenix Bird by Hans Christian Andersen and A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, to engage the students and assess their understanding of the topics.
