This bundle includes 5 close reading lessons. You can view select previews of each of the lessons by using the following links:
A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Author's Craft (Book: City Dog, Country Frog)
A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Author's Craft: Word Choice
A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Plot (Uses the Book Knuffle Bunny)
A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Theme (Uses the Book Chester's Way)
A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Character Development (Book: My Name is Yoon)
These lessons were written by myself and two other teachers after we read the book Notice and Note by Beers and Probst, and after we attended a conference on the common core reading standards put on by Lucy Calkins. We thought to ourselves, "Wouldn't it be great if a Notice and Note book existed for younger students?"
These lessons were created to fill that void and to teach young students how to read closely for what a text says (key ideas and details) and how the text says it (craft and structure) The lessons are aligned to CCSS.
Each lesson includes a scripted lesson plan following Lucy Calkins' Writer's Workshop format for lessons. Each lesson uses a picture book to teach students to look closely for 1. Theme, 2. Character Development 3. Author's Craft 4. Word Choice 5. Plot. All lessons include example anchor charts and organizers for the students to fill in.
We use these lessons in our classrooms to teach our students to read text closely. The students then apply the strategies learned (and use the anchor charts and organizers) to do the same deep reading work with other texts. We have seen tremendous improvement in the way our students are able to analyze text.
Please also view the following link to see a close reading unit using Patricia Polacco picture books. Students use the knowledge they learn in this unit and apply it to these books! It's a great extension to use after the close reading bundle.
