This is a close reading graphic organizer that I use in my heterogeneous 4th grade classroom. Students read a short, exemplar text three times. During the first read, they highlight and write two words in the first box. During the second read, students try to determine the meaning of their chosen words using context clues. During the third read, students make connections to the vocabulary beyond the text. Generally, I use this graphic organizer during small group instruction to start the year, then it becomes an individual activity as the year progresses.
