PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

As students get older, the text they read becomes more complex. Students need to learn strategies to unlock the complexity of passages and excerpts in order to fully understand the text. First, students need to be explicitly told that they are going to be expected to do some "close reading" during the year. They need to know what this entails. While teachers first, and foremost, need to instill the LOVE of reading to their students, they also need to help students figure out how to read and understand complex text. I designed this PowerPoint to use with 5th, 6th, and 7th graders at the beginning of the year to explicitly show them what close reading is, and how they can "dig deeper" into passages and texts. There is an anchor chart that can be hung up to help students read and respond while reading. Teachers can do mini-lessons to help students look for more "formal" examples of good reading. At the end of the PowerPoint, students can write in their own words what good readers do.
