There's nothing better to build reading comprehension skills and teach content than through close reading of primary texts. This letter of Pliny to Trajan, discussing Christians in the Roman Empire, is set up to encourage the development of metacognitive skills and full class discussion. The reading has line numbers to facilitate discussion and help students with IEP's. Students are asked to annotate the text in the column to the right by writing questions, making predictions, connections, sharing reactions and finding new definitions. The end has guided reading questions for the whole class to discuss.
