Help your students practice close reading and essay writing while also meeting expectations of the Common Core State Standards by guiding them through two poems: “First Lesson" by Philip Booth and "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden. Then, facilitate their understanding of the speakers’ attitudes and central themes as they construct connections between the poems and practice writing literary analysis essays.
This 18-page resource includes the following:
-explicit lesson plan with identified Common Core ELA Anchor Standards
-contextual reading guide
-sample annotation passage
-rereading strategy handout
-poetry graphic organizer
-literary analysis essay prompt
-short literary analysis essay rubric
-key (including detailed responses for all activities and a sample essay)
The poems for this lesson can easily be found in most English textbooks or poetry anthologies. If you do not have copies of the poems, links are provided (to respect copyright) to online access of the poems.
Incorporating all strands of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) Anchor Standards, this "paired passages" lesson encourages students to practice skills in annotation, analysis, and synthesis. Students complete handouts with before-, during-, and post-reading strategies, which provide scaffolding for diverse learners. Afterwards, students respond to a literary analysis writing task that imitates the style of the PARCC prototype.
With its detailed instructions and samples, this resource would make an excellent lesson for a substitute if you will be out for a couple of days.
